1. Application and Environmental Impact of Aluminum Alloy in Aerospace Industry
(1) Application situation
Aluminum alloys are widely used in the aerospace industry. In terms of structural materials, it has high specific strength and excellent processing performance, and is commonly used in the manufacturing of structural components such as aircraft fuselage, skin, and cabin doors. High strength aluminum alloys such as 7075, 2000 series, and 7000 series have high yield strength and good mechanical properties. They are widely used in aircraft structural components, accounting for 70-80% of the proportion, and have replaced expensive titanium alloys in many fields. In terms of special-purpose materials, aluminum alloys are also used to manufacture radiation shielding components for spacecraft. For example, a new type of aluminum alloy developed by Austrian scientists has a radiation resistance that is 100 times that of 6061 aluminum alloy widely used in spacecraft, and can maintain flexibility and strength even after being exposed to high doses of radiation. In the field of additive manufacturing, the application of additive manufacturing technology in the aerospace industry is gradually increasing, and aluminum alloy plays an important role in it. Typical application examples include engine devices, main components, rotating tables, remote control parts, etc. In terms of civil aircraft, aluminum alloys are also widely used in civil aircraft. For example, in the large passenger aircraft C919 with independent intellectual property rights in China, the amount of aluminum lithium alloy material used is about 15.5%, which is used to manufacture the front fuselage skin. In the field of rockets and satellites, aluminum alloy is not only used in aircraft, but also plays an important role in the manufacturing of carrier rockets and satellites. Aluminum alloy die-casting parts are widely used in the manufacturing of aircraft fuselage and structural components, such as the Airbus A380 aircraft, which is composed of 44% of its weight made up of aluminum alloy.
(2) Environmental impact
Energy consumption: The production of aluminum alloy requires a large amount of energy, including electricity and fuel. During the production processes such as melting, casting, and extrusion, high-temperature heating is required, which leads to significant energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Waste discharge: During the production process of aluminum alloy, waste residue, wastewater, exhaust gas and other waste materials will be generated. Waste residue contains elements such as aluminum, iron, and silicon. If not handled properly, it can cause pollution to soil and water bodies. Wastewater may contain heavy metal ions, acidic and alkaline substances, etc., which can cause harm to the water environment. Waste gas may contain pollutants such as dust, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, etc., which can cause pollution to the atmospheric environment.
Corrosion problem: Once corrosion occurs in aircraft materials, it not only hinders the performance of the aircraft itself, but in severe cases, it can even cause huge losses to people's lives and property safety. Under normal atmospheric conditions, the aluminum oxide film formed on the surface of aluminum alloy can protect its surface and exhibit good corrosion resistance. However, when corrosive media exist, such as halides in nature, they can damage the dense oxide film on the surface of aluminum alloy, causing damage to the surface and interior of the metal material, resulting in a decrease in the material's ability to resist corrosion and fatigue damage, and thus significantly reducing the service life of aircraft structural aluminum alloy. Aircraft will face various harmful environments during actual service, such as air pollution, industrial pollution, humid air, salt spray, saltwater, etc. The saltwater environment causes the most serious damage to aircraft structures. There are still a large number of stress concentration areas in the aircraft structure, such as various connection joints, rivet holes, fasteners, etc. These stress concentration areas are often the places where fatigue cracks originate, posing a significant threat to the safe operation of the aircraft.
2. Measures to reduce the environmental impact of aluminum alloys in the aerospace industry
(1) Improve production process
Adopting clean energy: In the production process of aluminum alloys, clean energy such as solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, etc. should be used as much as possible to reduce dependence on traditional fossil fuels, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions.
Optimize production process: Through technological innovation and process improvement, optimize the production process of aluminum alloy, improve energy utilization efficiency, and reduce waste generation. For example, advanced melting technology, casting technology, extrusion technology, etc. are adopted to improve product quality and production efficiency, while reducing energy consumption and waste emissions.
Strengthen waste management: effectively treat and recycle the waste residue, wastewater, exhaust gas, etc. generated during the production process of aluminum alloys. Waste residue can be recycled and reused to extract valuable metals such as aluminum; Wastewater can be treated and discharged to meet standards, or reused; Waste gas can be purified to reduce the emission of pollutants.
(2) Optimize material design
Developing high-performance aluminum alloys: Developing high-performance aluminum alloy materials, such as aluminum lithium alloys, while ensuring material performance, reducing material density, improving material strength and corrosion resistance, thereby reducing material usage, energy consumption, and waste emissions.
Adopting additive manufacturing technology: The application of additive manufacturing technology in the aerospace field is gradually increasing, and aluminum alloys play an important role in it. Through additive manufacturing technology, the amount of materials used can be precisely controlled to reduce material waste, and more complex structural components can be manufactured to improve product performance.
Strengthen material recycling: Establish a comprehensive aluminum alloy recycling system to recycle and reuse waste aluminum alloys. Recycled aluminum alloys can be remelted and cast to produce new aluminum alloy products, reducing the demand for raw materials, energy consumption, and environmental impact.
(3) Strengthen environmental management
Establish strict environmental standards: The government and relevant departments should establish strict environmental standards for aluminum alloy production to regulate and limit energy consumption and waste emissions of enterprises. Enterprises should strictly follow production standards to ensure minimal environmental impact.
Strengthen environmental monitoring: Establish a comprehensive environmental monitoring system to monitor the energy consumption and waste emissions of aluminum alloy production enterprises in real time. Once environmental problems are discovered, timely measures should be taken for rectification to ensure environmental quality.
Promote environmental protection concepts: Strengthen environmental protection publicity and education for enterprises and the public, promote environmental protection concepts, and enhance the environmental awareness of enterprises and the public. Encourage enterprises to adopt environmentally friendly technologies and processes to reduce environmental impact; Guide the public to choose environmentally friendly products and support sustainable development.
