1. The Importance of Aluminum Alloy in the Aerospace Field
Aluminum alloy has a wide range of applications in aerospace manufacturing. In aircraft structures, aluminum alloy is used to manufacture components such as fuselage skin, wing beams, and stringers. Its lightweight characteristics help reduce the takeoff weight of the aircraft, improve fuel efficiency, and increase range. In terms of spacecraft, aluminum alloy is used to manufacture rocket shells, satellite structural components, etc., which can withstand harsh environments such as high temperature, high pressure, and vibration during launch. Therefore, further exploring the performance potential of aluminum alloys is of great significance for the development of the aerospace industry.
2. Special treatment technology for aluminum alloy and its improvement on performance
(1) Heat treatment
Principle: Heat treatment is a process of changing the internal structure of aluminum alloy through heating, insulation, and cooling, in order to obtain the desired properties. Common heat treatment methods include solution treatment, aging treatment, etc. Solid solution treatment is the process of heating aluminum alloy to high temperatures, allowing the alloying elements to fully dissolve into the aluminum matrix, forming a supersaturated solid solution; Aging treatment is the process of holding aluminum alloy at a lower temperature for a period of time after solid solution treatment, which decomposes the supersaturated solid solution, precipitates strengthening phases, and improves the strength and hardness of the alloy.
Performance improvement: After appropriate heat treatment, the strength and hardness of aluminum alloy can be significantly improved while maintaining good plasticity and toughness. For example, after T6 aging treatment, the tensile strength of 7075 aluminum alloy can reach over 500MPa, which is nearly twice that of untreated aluminum alloy. This strength enhancement enables the structural components of aerospace vehicles to withstand greater loads, improving the safety and reliability of the aircraft.
(2) Surface treatment
Anodic oxidation
Principle: Anodizing is the process of forming an oxide film on the surface of aluminum alloy. Aluminum alloy is used as an anode and placed in an electrolyte. When electrified, the aluminum surface undergoes an oxidation reaction, forming a dense layer of aluminum oxide film.
Performance improvement: The oxide film has good corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and insulation properties. In the aerospace environment, it can effectively prevent the corrosion of aluminum alloy surfaces and extend the service life of aircraft. For example, when an aircraft flies in harsh environments such as humidity and salt spray, anodized aluminum alloy components can resist corrosion and maintain structural integrity.
Spray anti-corrosion coating
Principle: Apply a layer of anti-corrosion coating on the surface of aluminum alloy through spraying technology, such as epoxy resin coating, polyurethane coating, etc.
Performance improvement: Anti corrosion coatings can isolate aluminum alloys from contact with the external environment, preventing corrosion from corrosive media such as moisture and oxygen. At the same time, some functional coatings also have characteristics such as high temperature resistance and radiation resistance, which can meet the needs of aerospace vehicles in different environments.
(3) Deformation strengthening
Principle: Deformation strengthening is the process of producing plastic deformation in aluminum alloys through cold processing (such as cold rolling, cold drawing, cold extrusion, etc.), thereby increasing their dislocation density, hindering dislocation movement, and improving the strength and hardness of the alloy.
Performance improvement: After deformation strengthening, the strength of aluminum alloy is significantly improved, but the plasticity will be reduced. In practical applications, the degree of deformation can be reasonably controlled as needed to achieve the optimal balance between strength and plasticity. For example, when manufacturing thin-walled structural components for aerospace vehicles, using appropriate deformation strengthening processes can reduce component weight while ensuring structural strength.
(4) Composite processing
Combining multiple special processing techniques can achieve synergistic effects and further enhance the performance of aluminum alloys. For example, first heat treat the aluminum alloy to improve its strength and hardness, and then perform anodizing treatment to enhance its corrosion resistance. This composite treatment method can make aluminum alloys have high strength, good corrosion resistance, and wear resistance at the same time, meeting the comprehensive requirements of material properties for aerospace vehicles.
